- Henry Holland Buckman
Henry Holland Buckman (1858-1914) was an attorney from
Duval County, Florida , who became alegislator in theFlorida Legislature and served on theJudiciary Committee . Buckman is known for being the author of the Buckman Act, a 1905 law that created the foundation for higher education in the state of Florida and reorganized higher education into three institutions,segregated by race andgender , as follows:
*Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University forAfrican Americans
*Florida State University for Caucasianwomen
*University of Florida for Caucasianmen The gender separation aspect of the Buckman Act was overturned by the Florida Legislature in 1947 when all universities were made
coeducational . The racial segregation aspect of the Buckman Act was overturned by theCivil Rights Act of 1964 .Buckman was also instrumental in establishing a state road system in Florida and developing the St. Johns River channel.
Honors
Buckman Hall at the University of Florida and theBuckman Bridge inJacksonville, Florida are both named for Representative Buckman.The "Henry H. Buckman Lock" is part of theCross Florida Barge Canal project, also named in honor of Buckman.External links
