Irish constitutional referendum, 1998

Irish constitutional referendum, 1998

A referendum was held in the Republic of Ireland on 22 May 1998 in an attempt to make two amendments to the Constitution of Ireland. Both measures were approved.

Eighteenth amendment

The Eighteenth Amendment introduced two new articles into the constitution which allowed the government to ratify the Amsterdam Treaty.

Nineteenth amendment

The Nineteenth Amendment to the constitution changed articles 2 and 3 which effectively claimed Irish sovereignty over Northern Ireland, a requirement of the 1998 Belfast Agreement.
