Jer Doheny (1874-1929) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Tullaroan and with the Kilkenny senior inter-county team in the 1890s and 1900s.

Early life

Jer Doheny was born in Ballycallan, County Kilkenny, Ireland in 1874. A cousin of another great Kilkenny hurler, Pat 'Fox' Maher, he spent most of his life in Tullaroan where he worked as a farmer. Doheny played cricket in the early 1890s, however, he later concentrated on the game of hurling.

Playing career

Club

Doheny won his very first county title at the age of fourteen in 1888 with the Threecastles club. He later played club hurling with Tullaroan where he won a further nine county titles in 1895, 1897, 1899, 1901, 1902, 1904, 1907, 1910 and 1911.

Inter-county

Doheny first joined the Kilkenny senior hurling team in 1893. That year he won his first Leinster title, however, Kilkenny were subsequently defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland final. Two years later in 1895 Doheny won a second Leinster title, however, Tipperary defeated ‘the Cats’ in the championship decider. He added a third Leinster title to his collection in 1897, however, in spite of leading at half-time in the subsequent All-Ireland final, Limerick emerged as the victors. Doheny captured a fourth provincial title in 1898, however, for the fourth successive occasion Kilkenny were later beaten in an All-Ireland final. He won two further Leinster honours in 1900 and 1903, however, All-Ireland success still eluded him. In 1904 Doheny won a seventh Leinster title as captain of his native-county. Kilkenny later defeated Cork by a single point, giving Doheny his first All-Ireland title. This game wasn’t played until 1906 and Doheny retired from inter-county hurling shortly after.

Jer Doheny died at the age of 55 in 1929.
