The Public Relations Society of America's Miami chapter began its life on October 13, 1955 as the Florida chapter of PRSA. With the founding of a chapter upstate, Florida's first chapter became the South Florida chapter. When members in Broward County and points north formed the Gulfstream chapter in 1979, the South Florida chapter became the Miami chapter.
Presently, seven PRSA chapters now operate in Florida. Collectively, they comprise the Sunshine District.
With more than 220 members, the Miami chapter enjoys an outstanding reputation in the PRSA world for management strength and program quality. The Miami Chapter enjoys two particular distinctions. The first is its endowed scholarship program, the largest and most successful operated by any PRSA chapter. From a fund balance nearing $150,000, the chapter presents eight $1,500 scholarships annually -- two each to students at the University of Miami, Florida International University, Florida Memorial University and Miami-Dade College. A second distinction is its success in mirroring dramatic community changes with regard to ethnic composition. Today, minorities comprise nearly half of all members, a higher proportion than any other PRSA chapter, and chapter leadership represents the same degree of diversity. As a result, the Miami chapter has won a national PRSA diversity award and its innovative approach to achieving diversity, predicated upon programming rather than recruitment, has become the centerpiece of PRSA's National Diversity Toolkit.
