Scottish Church College and later at the law college of theUniversity of Calcutta .He started his career with acclaimed Bengali director
Mrinal Sen 's film "Interview" (1970). He received the International Best Actor Award fromKarlovy Vary for his act in his debut film.He become a popular romantic hero in the 1970s and featured in memorbale films like "Mouchak", "Devi Chaudharani", "Raag Anuraag", "Sayang Siddha".
Satyajit Ray cast him in his film "Sakha Prosakha", where he played the role of a young man who was caught between values and tradition.Then came "Shatru", the 1980 blockbuster which transformed him from a romantic hero to an angry action hero.
