History

The refinery first planted its roots in August 1906 when it was built by The National Refining Company—the second largest oil company in the country at the time. Built on 75 acres, the refinery processed 2,500 barrels per day of crude oil—a humble beginning compared to today's convert|108000|oilbbl/d|m3/d|sing=on processing capacity. In 1944, National Refining Company sold the refinery to Cooperative Refinery Association. The nickname COOP would remain for years afterward. In 1982, CRA merged with Farmland Industries. In 2000, Coffeyville Resources LLC purchased the refinery.

Moving into the present day, the plant's operations include a nitrogen fertilizer plant, owned and operated by Coffeyville Resources Nitrogen Fertilizers, LLC, which is located adjacent to the refinery. Construction began on this state-of-the-art nitrogen fertilizer facility in 1998, and like our refinery, the plant has an interesting tale to tell. The initial build of the nitrogen fertilizer plant included shipping an existing gasification plant to Coffeyville from the West Coast. A Texaco coal gasification plant, originally located in Cool Water, California, was disassembled, refurbished and its technology converted to be able to gasify petroleum coke instead of coal. It was then reassembled to form the heart of our nitrogen fertilizer operations.

The plant, which is only one of two fertilizer plants in North America not reliant on natural gas as a raw material, first began production in late 2000. It operates using a petroleum coke gasification technology, formerly licensed by Texaco, as well as other technology, to produce approximately 369,300 short tons of ammonia and 633,100 short tons of Urea Ammonium Nitrate Solution (UAN) per year, and is the low cost producer and marketer of upgraded nitrogen fertilizer products in North America.
