John Lyons (1924-?) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with the famous Glen Rovers club and with the Cork senior inter-county team from 1946 until 1960.

Playing career

Club

Lyons played his club hurling with the famous Glen Rovers club on the north side of Cork city and enjoyed much success. He won his first two senior county titles in 1944 and 1945. Lyons won eight more county medals in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1953, 1954, 1958, 1959 and 1960.

Inter-county

Lyons first came to prominence with the Cork senior hurlers in the early 1950s. He won his first Munster title as a full-back in 1952. Lyons later collected his first All-Ireland medal following a victory over Dublin in the championship decider. Cork continued their winning ways in 1953 with Lyons adding a National Hurling League medal to his collection. He later collected his second Munster title before later winning a second All-Ireland medal, following Cork’s defeat of Galway in one of the dirtiest All-Ireland finals ever. In 1954 Cork made it three-in-a-row by capturing another set of Munster and All-Ireland titles. Once again Lyons played a key role at full-back in helping Cork to maintain this dominance. Cork lost their provincial crown in 1955, however, the following year he won a fourth Munster title in five years. Lyons’s side were later defeated by Wexford in the All-Ireland final.
