Stamford Brook is the confluence of three smaller streams, arising in West
London , flowing intoHammersmith Creek and thence into theRiver Thames .The brook starts from a spring at Springfield Gardens in Acton. sewer . The name may be a corruption of 'stoney ford' or 'sandy ford' by which it was crossed by King Street. Stamford Brook has given its name to the surrounding area betweenHammersmith andChiswick and to localLondon Underground station,Stamford Brook tube station .Plans have been proposed
as of 2008 to bring Stamford Brook to the surface at Hammersmith by putting the A4 underground. Stamford Bridge is not a crossing point on Stamford Brook, but is built near the site of a bridge which carried the Kings Road over another stream called
Counter's Creek . [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=50027 British History Online "Stamford Bridge and the Billings area", Survey of London: volume 41: Brompton (1983)] ]ee also
