Paul Pierson (born
1959 ) is an Americanpolitical scientist , noted for his research on comparativepublic policy andpolitical economy , thewelfare state , and American political development.Pierson is a native of
Eugene, Oregon , where both of his parents taught at theUniversity of Oregon . He graduated with aB.A. inpolitical science fromOberlin College in1981 , and then attendedgraduate school atYale University , completing an M.A. andM.Phil in1986 and aPhD degree inpolitical science in1989 .Pierson taught at
Harvard University from1989 to2004 , when he moved to theUniversity of California, Berkeley and where he is presently aprofessor ofpolitical science and the Avice Saint chair inpublic policy . He was avisiting professor at theEuropean University Institute in1997 .Pierson's first book, "Dismantling the Welfare State?", was a revision of his doctoral
dissertation and won theAmerican Political Science Association 's Kammerer Prize for the best work on American national politics published in1994 . His journal article “Increasing Returns, Path Dependence, and the Study of Politics” won the Heinz Eulau Award for the best article published in the "American Political Science Review " in2000 .Pierson was president of the Politics and History Section of the
