*Sir James Hall, 2nd Baronet (d. 27 March 1742).
**He married (as his 2nd wife) Margaret Pringle, daughter of Sir John Pringle, 2nd Bart of Stichill. They had issue. She married the celebrated Jacobite poet William Hamilton of Bangour (1704-54) in 1743 and had one son, James, who succeeded to the estate and later married Margaret, daughter of James Bruce of Kinniard. Hamilton belonged to a circle of Edinburgh intellectuals and writers that included Allan Ramsay Senior, who passionately supported the cause of the Stuarts.]*

**He was retoured heir of line and conquest on 4 January 1750, to his uncle, William Hall of Whitehall, near Chirnside, one of the Principal Clerks of the Court of Session. ** Sir James Hall is the most well-known baronet, a notable figure in the Scottish Enlightenment; MP for St.Michaels 1807-1812. He married Lady Helen Douglas, sister ofThomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk and daughter of the 4th Earl of Selkirk.
