The company's first resort in Phuket opened in 1994 and since then it has grown its portfolio to 20 hotels and resorts, 53 spas, 62 retail galleries and 2 golf courses. The company has an emphasis on building a strong brand and has thus been able to charge higher fees for guests in its resorts.
In 2004, the company's resorts in South East Asia was severely affected by the tsunami which brought about devastation to the region.
In 2006, Banyan Tree successfully listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange and raised capital for its expansion. The company have used this capital to build new resorts in Yunnan province, China, and the
