Cunningham started his career at Tolka Rovers and was there between
August 1 ,1988 andSeptember 18 ,1989 .He signed for Millwall and in the five years following made 136 league appearances, scoring one goal.

Jon Goodman moved to Wimbledon in November 1994, for the joint fee of £1,300,000. Cunningham played 250 league games for Wimbledon.He moved to Birmingham City in 2002. In his first season as a City player he was named Blues' Player of the Year..
However after the club’s relegation at the end of the 2005-06 season, Cunningham was released along with seven other first team players. On
