- Crookesbroom
-
Crookesbroom is a place name in the village of Hatfield, South Yorkshire.
Name
Crookesbroom literally means "crooked lane amongst the broom" (referring to the plant, not the sweeping implement). The shape of the lane which passes through it attests to this etymology. In recent history the name has come only to apply to Crookesbroom Lane, but the name originally referred to an area between the villages of Hatfield and Dunscroft and appeared on 19th century Ordnance Survey maps.
History
In the 1920s a house named "Crookesbroom" was built there for the deputy manager of the recently sunk Hatfield Main colliery shaft (actually closer to the village of Stainforth). The name was later amended to 'Crookesbroom House' to avoid confusion with the lane and the somewhat obsolete subdistrict in which it stood. Crookesbroom House was demolished in 2006 following a period of disuse.
