The son of Lt-Col. Charles R. Crowdy and his wife Kate Porter, Crowdy was educated at
Gresham's School ,Holt, Norfolk (1933-1942), and theUniversity of Edinburgh (1942-1947). He took the degrees of MB and BCh in 1947, and later a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (1956), Diploma in Public Health and Diploma in Industrial Health (both 1957).Career summary
