footnotes =Gewane is a town in northeastern
Ethiopia . Located in Administrative Zone 3 of theAfar Region , it has an elevation of 618 meters above sea level.Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this town has an estimated total population of 11,032, of whom 6,304 were males and 4,728 were females. [ [http://www.csa.gov.et/text_files/2005_national_statistics.htm CSA 2005 National Statistics] , Table B.4] According to the 1994 national census this town has a population of 8,600. It is the largest settlement in Gewane woreda.
Philip Briggs has described Gewane as "a somewhat unremarkable urban sprawl, distinguished only by the imposing presence of Mount Azelu, an isolated peak of volcanic origin which rises almost 1,000m above the surrounding plains east of the town." [Philip Briggs, "Ethiopia: The Bradt Travel Guide", 3rd edition (Chalfont St Peters: Bradt, 2002), p. 342] The headquarters of the
Yangudi Rassa National Park are located in Gewane. The British explorer Nesbitt, who travelled through the area in the 1920s, described his stay of a couple of days in a village here. The National Afar Liberation Movement, run by young intellectuals, met in Gewane with the
Derg in April1976 in an Afar congress. The principle of complete autonomy was recognised, but it became a forgotten promise after theOgaden War . The weekly newspaper "Tobiya" reported in January1996 that three high ranking employees of the Water Resource and Development Authority had been killed near the town.
