Anthony Jackson (cricketer)

Anthony Jackson (cricketer)

Anthony Jackson (later Anthony Mather-Jackson, November 9, 1899 — October 11, 1983) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler who played for Derbyshire. Jackson was born in Westminster and died in Kirklington.

Jackson started his Derbyshire career in 1920, making his debut for Derbyshire against Nottinghamshire, and playing one further match in the season. Derbyshire's entire season was poor, managing just one draw and seventeen losses from eighteen games, and Jackson spent the next year out of first-class cricket.

Jackson returned in 1922, and things were certainly looking more positive for Derbyshire, as they finished in a respectable position in the table, while Jackson himself scored two half-centuries, including a career-best 75 against Leicestershire. Derbyshire struggled in 1923, and their first match during the 1924 season was against the touring South Africans, which included a five-Test series against England. Derbyshire suffered a very poor 1924 domestic season, finishing without a win.

1926 started much the same as 1924 had, with Jackson propping up the Derbyshire eleven against the touring Australians, and Jackson finished the season with all three of his career half-centuries to his credit. However, when Jackson failed to repeat 1926's good form in the matches in which he played during the 1927 season, he exited the team.

Two of Jackson's cousins, Geoffrey and Guy also played first-class cricket for Derbyshire, the latter being club captain for eight years.
