Sacasa

The founder of the Sacasa family in Nicaragua was Captain Francisco Sacasa Belastquigoitea y Salinas from Spain. He was a cadet in the Regiment of Dragons of Italy. His first voyage to the province of Nicaragua was made in 1747 with Governor Alonso Fernandez de Heredia. Traveling with him was also the Royal Standard Bearer Juan Francisco de Aguilar y Santa Cruz. His second voyage to Nicaragua was made in 1761. His ship was thrown off course by a storm towards Florida. He was made prisoner by an English privateer and remained as a prisoner for 7 months in the Presidio of San Agustin de la Florida. Once freed he proceeded to San Cristobal de la Habana. When Don Jose Herrera Sotomayor died in 1762 he was named Castilian of the Castle of the River San Juan. He married Maria Lucia Marenco Lopez del Corral, legitimate daughter of Pedro Marenco who was Corregidor of Matagalpa and Chontales and Mercedes Lopez del Corral who was born in the province of Cartago, Costa Rica. Their children were Josefina Sacasa Marenco who married Joaquin Chamorro Fajardo. Maria del Pilar Sacasa Marenco who married Manuel Antonio Arana. Roberto Sacasa Marenco who later became a General Lieutenant in the Spanish Army. Roberto Sacasa Marenco had a distinguished political career and held various positions in government including Regidor of the City Council of Granada from 1774 to 1779. He was named by the King of Spain Captain of the First Company of the Infantry Battalion of Granada on May 15, 1782. He was First Mayor from 1785 to 1786 and from this period on he served as Lieutenant Minister of the Royal Property of Leon. In 1811 he became once again Mayor of Granada and it is said he had many children outside of marriage before he married Paula Parodi Duran legitimate daughter of Captain Juan de Parodi and Maria Duran Cabeza de Vaca. They only had one child, Jose Crisanto Sacasa Parodi who was born on October 25, 1779. Like his father, Jose Crisanto Sacasa Parodi, had a distinguished political career. He became Colonel of the Royal Spanish Army. Political Chief in 1821, Deputy of the Courts of Cadiz and candidate for Chief of State in 1826. He married Maria de los Angeles Mendez Diaz Cabeza de Vaca.
