Evans played his first game during 1878, though he did not play again for three more years, representing the team in three matches during 1881. Evans, a middle order batsman, played one further first-class match, against a touring Australian team, before giving up the game.

Following his exit from the game, Evans moved to Chesterfield, and took up employment as an assistant traffic manager. He had two brothers, one of whom, Thomas Evans, played for Derbyshire during the 1883 season, and a sister.
