Del Monte (passenger train)

Del Monte (passenger train)

The "Del Monte" was a passenger train run by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The train was formed in 1880 as the "Del Monte Express". It ran until May 1, 1971, the day before Amtrak took over intercity passenger train service. The route of the train was from San Francisco to Monterey, California (although it did go as far as Pacific Grove). In 1948, the Del Monte Express killed Ed Ricketts, a friend of John Steinbeck, by hitting his car while he was driving over the Monterey tracks.

Since the train's demise, many groups have tried to get rail service back to the Monterey Bay. However as of 2008 no such service has been made.
