The Type 45 240 mm howitzer as a Japanese heavy howitzer that entered service in 1912. It was the first such weapon to be entirely designed in Japan. It was used during the Sino-Japanese war and during World War II where it was used in Bataan and the Philippines, as well as China. It was developed after the Russo-Japanese war showed the value of heavy guns when attacking forts.

It is an extremely heavy weapon, weighing nearly 38,000 kg when emplaced. Setup of the weapon requires considerable time, and the use of crane to raise the heavy barrel onto the firing platform. The gun was normally used in static positions, either for siege or defence. For transport it was normally broken into components, which were divided over a total of ten vehicles

The gun can fire a 440 pound (200 kg) shell with a muzzle velocity of 1,300 feet per second (400 meters per second) to a range of 11,000 yards (10 km). For reloading, the gun is lowered to the horizontal. The breech is an interrupted screw design.
