Thatcher's England

Thatcher's England

Thatcher's England is a derogatory term for England during the 1980s, all of which fell under the tenure of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister. The term is most often used to portray an oppressive, almost-Orwellian status quo that punk and other youth cultures were rebellions against; the preface to Alan Moore's "V for Vendetta" mentions England under Thatcher and the Conservative Party as a major influence on its dystopian setting, retrospectives of 80s punk rock bands often cite the influence of "Thatcher's England" on the bands' sound, and in the 1980s BBC comedy series "The Young Ones", the character Rik repeatedly complains about how things are in "Thatcher's England", citing it as the source of most of his troubles (whether relevant or not).
