The House of Dinefwr refers to the descendants of
Cadell ap Rhodri King ofSeisyllwg , son ofRhodri the Great .With the death of Rhodri Mawr, the kingdom of
Gwynedd passed to his eldest sonAnarawd ap Rhodri . Rhodri's second sonCadell ap Rhodri , however, looked outsideGwynedd 's traditional borders and took possession of the Dark Ages kingdom ofDyfed by the late 9th century, establishing his capital at the citadel ofDinefwr . Cadell ap Rhodri's descendants are designated "Dinefwr" after the citadel from which they would ruleDyfed . The Dinefwr dynasty under kingHywel Dda would uniteDyfed andSeisyllwg into the kingdom ofDeheubarth in the early 10th century. The Dinefwr dynasty would rule inDeheubarth until their conquest by theAnglo-Normans in the 13th century. This branch would compete with HouseAberffraw for supremacy and influence inWales through-out the 10th, 11th, and 12th century, withPowys variously ruled between them. Eventually, a cadet branch of Dinefwr would establish itself inPowys by the mid 11th century, designatedMathrafal after the castle there.The
