Altstadt (English: Old Town) is a district in the Swiss city of Zürich. It is known as District 1. District 1 encompasses the same area that was once the total area of the city of Zürich until 1893, approximately corresponding to the area enclosed by the 1624 ramparts.

Administratively, District 1 is divided into four parts by the Zürich statistical office.

The four parts are Rathaus, Hochschulen, Lindenhof and City. "Lindenhof" and "Rathaus" correspond to the parts of the medieval city left and right of the Limmat, respectively. "City" is the part inside the 17th century ramparts but west of the medieval city walls (now west of the Bahnhofstrasse) plus the wedge between Limmat and Sihl, historically the city's shooting range, now the site of Zürich Main Station and the Platzspitz park."Hochschulen" is wedged between "Hirschengraben" (the historical course of the eastern moat) and "Rämistrasse", corresponding to the area taken up by the eastern fortifications of the 17th century ramparts, the hillside now holding the main buildings of both ETH Zürich and University of Zürich. "Hochschulen" in its southern end also includes the "Bellevue" and "Sechseläuten" squares as well as the theater and opera house.
