South Chungcheong province,South Korea . The current mayor isHong-Mook Choi . The city was created in 2003, by a split fromNonsan city, following prolonged local agitation.Approximately half (47%) of the city's inhabitants are either serving in the South Korean army, or are family of service members. The city hosts several major Korean and international military conferences.
Gyeryong Mountain ( _ko. 계룡산), adjacent to the city, is considered the mountain with the mostqi (spiritual energy) in Korea. It is also the heart ofGyeryongsan National Park .Modern History
Gyeryong city is one of the newest cities except for new cities near
Seoul . The establishment as a city was made in 2003, when it broke fromNonsan .According to data, Gyeryong city and around its area were called as Yunsan-Gun in 1896. After Japanese colinization, it was incorporated to Nonsan. Later Gyeryong was chosen as the site for military. In 1989, Military and army headquarters, Gyeryongdae, moved to Gyeryong City. In 1991, designated as special area by president. The congress voted and decided for the special legislative bill for the Gyeryong city establishmentin June 30, 2003.
