Stephen Gregory "Steve" Podborski (born
July 25 ,1957 ) is a former World Cup and Olympicdownhill skier fromCanada .Career
Born in
Toronto , Podborski grew up in theDon Mills community and started skiing at the age of three. He joined the Canadian alpine ski team in 1973 and joined the World Cup Tour in 1974. He was a member of theCrazy Canucks and won the downhillbronze medal at the1980 Winter Olympics . In 1981–82, he became the first North American to win theAlpine skiing World Cup downhill skiing championship. In total, he won eight Alpine skiing World Cup downhill races, including the Hahnenkamm downhill inKitzbühel , which he won twice. In 34 more races, he finished in the top 10. He retired in 1984 at age 26.In 1982, Podborski was made an Officer of the
Order of Canada . He was inducted into theCanadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1985,Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.Podborski is on the organizing committee of the
2010 Winter Olympics inVancouver , responsible for international relations; he also works as a sports newscaster inSalt Lake City . He worked as a commentator for NBC during their 2006 coverage of the Winter Olympics in Torino, covering multiple skiing events, including aerials.He was previously married to
Ann Rohmer . Steve Podborski currently works forTelus in Vancouver and Whistler as Director of Sports Marketing.
