General Phil Darnell

General Phil Darnell

General (formerly Colonel) Phil Darnell is a fictional leader of military intelligence who was a supporting character in the DC Comics adventures of superheroine Wonder Woman.

Comic book history

Col. Phil Darnell first appeared in "All-Star Comics" #8 (Dec. 1941-Jan. 1942) as Steve Trevor's boss.

While Trevor and Wonder Woman were en route to return Trevor, following his crash landing, to Man's World, they stopped briefly for Wonder Woman to capture the Nazi spies who had shot down Trevor's plane. Darnell immediately rewarded Trevor with a promotion from Captain to Major. ("Wonder Woman" #1.)

Darnell was promoted to general for his rule in capturing Draska Nishki.

Darnell appeared throughout the Golden and Silver Age adventures of Wonder Woman and then reappeared in the Bronze Age when Diana joined a new Steve Trevor in a special military intelligence program operated through the Air Force. Darnell struggled politically with Sen. Keith Covington, who was in league with a former lover of Darnell's out for revenge. Covington was poised to expose Darnell for illegally shipping arms to Tropidorean rebels, until the reality-altering events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths took place ("Wonder Woman" #328).
