Club
FitzGerald played his club
hurling with his local Midleton club, however, it was with the divisional side Imokilly that he nearly enjoyed winning a senior county title. Unfortunately, it was St. Finbarr's who were victorious in that 1968 County final.Inter-county
FitzGerald first came to prominence as a member of the Cork minor hurling team in the late 1950s. Unfortuanetly, his side were beaten in the Munster Championship by Tipperary in both 1956 and 1957. The following year FitzGerald made his senior debut with Cork in a Munster Championship game against Clare. Unfortunately, most of his career coincided with a sharp downturn in Cork’s hurling fortunes. FitzGerald played in three consecutive Munster finals in 1959, 1960 and 1961, however, he ended up on the losing side on every occasion as the victors went on to contest the All-Ireland final. Cork fell heavily to Tipperary in the provincial deciders again in 1964 and 1965 and it looked as if FitzGerald would never win a Munster medal. All this changed in 1966 when Cork defeated Waterford in the provincial final, giving FitzGErald his first, and only, Munster title. Cork later defeated Kilkenny in the championship decider, giving FitzGerald a coveted All-Ireland medal. He also won a
Railway Cup medal with Munster that year. Following Cork’s defeat in the championship in 1967 he retired from inter-county hurling.FitzGerald’s son,
Ger FitzGerald , won All-Ireland medals with Cork in 1986 and 1990.Teams
