Controversy
In 2001, she defied a request from the Vatican to prohibit Sister Joan Chittister from attending a dissident women's ordination conference in Dublin, Ireland. 127 out of the 128 members of her community of women religious supported her decision and co-signed her letter of declination to Rome. She was awarded the Call to Action Leadership Award in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 1, 2002. Vladimiroff stated at the time, citing her understanding of Benedictine tradition and history, that: "There is a fundamental difference in the understanding of obedience in the monastic tradition and in what is being used by the Vatican ... Benedictine authority and obedience are achieved through dialogue in a spirit of co-responsibility, always in the context of community. The prioress is to be a centre of unity and guide in the seeking of God. The member does the seeking."[citation needed]
The homepage of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, Pennsylvania received a "danger!" rating on fidelity from the traditionalist-minded Catholic Culture website; one of the criticisms was regarding the Chittister matter. Vladimiroff was praised by ARCC, the Association for the Rights of Catholics in the Church.
Honor
On February 21, 2007, the Erie City Council issued special proclamations recognizing three Erie area communities, including Vladimiroff, of women religious for making a difference in Erie through their respective ministries.[1]
