Bhushan Lal Karihaloo

Bhushan Lal Karihaloo, FIEAus MASME FASCE (born: September 1943, Srinagar, Kashmir) is a professor of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering and Leader of the Institute of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics at Cardiff University, and an expert on fracture mechanics.

Biography

Bhushan Lal Karihaloo received his Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree with First Class Honours and Gold Medal from the University of Ranchi, Master of Technology in Structural Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Doctor of Philosophy from Moscow Civil Engineering University, and Doctor of Engineering from the University of Sydney. His higher doctorate was awarded for the significant and lasting contribution made by his published work on Fracture Mechanics. In 2007, he was awarded a DSc (Honoris Causa) by St Petersburg University, Russia.

Prior to his present appointment, he has held chairs at the University of Newcastle, NSW, the University of Sydney, and Aalborg University, Denmark, besides visiting appointments at Northwestern University, Illinois, Oxford University, Essen University, Germany, The Technical University of Denmark, and The EC Center of Excellence on Advanced Materials in Warsaw. He has presented numerous keynote lectures at International Conferences and lectured extensively at Universities and Research Institutions in the USA, UK, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Australia and India.

Professor Karihaloo has held on average two substantial research grants per annum from the Royal Society, EC or EPSRC for projects dealing with the fracture and damage in metallic and non-metallic (especially cementitious and ceramic) materials. He has supervised 14 Master of Engineering (research) and 20 PhD theses. He has authored two books on fracture mechanics of concrete and ceramics, co-edited 11 books on structural optimisation and integrity, and written 350 technical papers.

Professor Karihaloo has advised widely on the development of high performance cementitious composites and ceramics and has participated in several International Standardisation Committees. He is a member of the editorial boards of nine international journals. He was awarded a Royal Society Nuffield Fellowship in 1982 and elected an Honorary Member of the Czech Society of Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in 1989 and an Honorary Fellow of the International Congress on Fracture in 2001. He was a member of the Executive Committee and Treasurer of the International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimisation (ISSMO). He was a member of the International Panels for the assessment of research on Mechanics in Italy and The Netherlands . He is Vice-President of the International Congress on Fracture (ICF), chair of the Royal Society UK National Panel for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, member of the Congress Committee of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), and Chairman of Technical Committee 9 on Fracture of Concrete of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS).

Professor Karihaloo has also developed and patented a high-performance, fibre reinforced, cement composite, which is currently under evaluation by a UK construction company for jointing precast concrete elements and as a wear resistant overlay over concrete surfaces.

In July 2006, Professor Karihaloo was awarded the prestigious Griffith Medal by the European Structural Integrity Society. This medal is awarded every four years, and only if there is a researcher worthy of the award. Only a handful of medals have been presented since the award's inception. The medal recognises Professor Karihaloo’s distinguished research career in the field of Structural Integrity, which spans over 25 years. He received the award for outstanding research in the field of theoretical fracture mechanics and fracture of quasi-brittle materials, in particular of concrete, fibre-reinforced cementitious composites, and advanced tough ceramics.
