The 9th Michigan Cavalry was organized at Coldwater, Michigan between January 8 and May 19, 1863.

The regiment was mustered out of service on July 21, 1865.

The regiment suffered 2 officers and 26 enlistedmen killed in action or mortally wounded and 2 officers and 154 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 184 fatalities.
