Folkwang Academy

The Folkwang Academy ("Folkwang Hochschule") is a school of advanced studies in music, theater, and dance, located in Essen, Germany, with additional facilities in Duisburg, Bochum, and Dortmund. The Folkwang Academy is the arts university of Germany's Ruhr Area.

The Folkwang Academy is the home of the 11-member international dance company "Folkwang Tanz-Studio" (FTS).

History

The academy shares its unusual name with the Museum Folkwang founded in 1902 by arts patron Karl Ernst Osthaus. Derived from Nordic mythology, the name "Folkwang" means "hall of Freyja," the Norse goddess of love and beauty. In 1927 opera director Rudolf Schulz-Dornburg and choreographer Kurt Jooss founded the Folkwang School for Music, Dance, and Speech in Essen. In 1928 a previously established school of design joined the Folkwang institution.
