Alpha Series
The man currently known as Cobray Gordon was originally named Ayin Barshem, a defective clone in Shiva Gozzo's Barshem series of clones, themselves based upon Ingram Prisken, the first in the series. While out on a recon mission near
Earth , Ayin encountered the Astranagant's remains. What Ayin didn't know was that Ingram's soul was still controlling it. Taking no chances, Ingram commanded the Astranagant to absorb Ayin's Varuch Ben. What happened next was unexpected: the Astranagant, instead of simply absorbing the mech, completely fused with it, creating the Werkbau. Ingram's soul then tried to possess Ayin's body, only to be overwhelmed by a newly created soul. This amnesic soul would fabricate itself a new name: Cobray Gordon. After a while, the Titans encountered the strange mech and tried to capture both it and its pilot, only to be stopped with the help of reinforcements showing up in the form of
Arado Balanga in hisWild Wurger andSeolla Schweizer in herWild Falken . Cobray was drafted into the Alpha Numbers after the scuffle, and seeing how potentially dangerous the Werkbau can be, Cobray would be given a Mass Production Type Nu Gundam to pilot, for the time being. A chance encounter with Calico McCready, the leader of the elite Golar Golem forces, as well as another product of the Barshem series, re-awakened Ingram's will. From then on, Cobray and Ingram would constantly struggle for control over Ayin's body. Eventually, Cobray was taken to a dimension devoid of time and space, where Ingram would reveal that he could not control Cobray, because Cobray's will to survive was too strong; it was so strong, in fact, that it was absorbing Ingram's own soul. With the last of his strength, Ingram passes the title of Time Diver onto Cobray, which, in turn, transformed the Werkbau into the Dis Astranagant. Cobray would then re-emerge to help the Alpha Numbers defeat Hazal Gozzo once and for all. After this incident, Cobray would continue his quarrel with Calico and would eventually learn that the Golar Golem leader was jealous of him, because Calico believed that Ingram, the Originator, would choose him over Cobray in his time of need. Cobray would defeat Calico, unveiling his enemy's face. As a result, Cobray decides to live for the future, instead of dwelling in the past. He would go on to help the Alpha Numbers defeat the Spirit Emperor,
Ruach Ganeden , and later,Keisar Ephes . At the end of his story, Cobray leaves his friends behind to continue his duties as the Time Diver.Original Generation Series
Cobray makes a brief appearance in Super Robot Wars Original Generations, though he is not present in the current universe. He is seen speaking with Ingram, saying he could not enter the Original Generation universe yet, while urging Ingram to break free from Euzeth Gozzo's control.
Notes
The prologue for the animated featured Ingram and Cobray fighting one another in their respective Astranagant and Dis Astranagant machines. Since the animated series is a retake on the events of the Original Generation game, this sequence is highly debated by fans as a possible outcome for future events in the Original Generation universe and its games. However, since Ingram never used the Astranagant in that particular timeline, this battle could be nothing more than a dream sequence, or perhaps a reflection of the meta-physical battle between the two in the Alpha 3 timeline, when Ingram tried to take over Cobray's body, with Cobray fighting back against the latter's influence.
In episode 25, Cobray makes a physical appearance, arriving in the Astragant to free the SRX from Septuagint. The Astragant then merges with the SRX, allowing Ryusei to use its Ain Soph Aur attack to destroy Septuagint.
