Rehbar-I

Rehbar-I

Rehbar-I was the first rocket launched into space by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). It was a two stage rocket consisting of a Nike-Cajun combination (which was earlier developed by NASA). It was launched from the Sonmiani Rocket Range on June 7, 1961 at approximately 1953 hours. The successful launch carried a payload of 80 pounds of sodium and it streaked up about 130 km into the atmosphere.

The launching of the Rehbar-1 gave Pakistan the honour of becoming the third country in Asia and only the tenth in the world in carrying out such a launch. Other countries that had carried out such launches of this type prior to Pakistan's launch were: USA, USSR, UK, France, Sweden, Italy, Canada, Japan and Israel.

It was followed by the successful launch of the Rehbar-II in 1962.
