Walter Edwards Houghton (
September 21 ,1904 inStamford, Connecticut -April 11 ,1983 ) was an American historian ofVictorian literature , best known for editing theWellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals .Biography
Houghton was educated at
Yale University and taught atHarvard University before moving toWellesley College in 1942. He remained at Wellesley until retirement in 1969. With his wife Esther he continued to work on the Wellesley Index: three volumes appeared before his death, and two more volumes were completed for publication after his death.Works
