- Emanuel Mendel
Emanuel Mendel (1839-1907) was a German
neurologist andpsychiatrist who was a university professor and director of a polyclinic inBerlin . He was founder and publisher of the "Neurologisches Centralblatt". Two of his better-known assistants wereMax Bielschowsky (1869-1940) andEdward Flatau (1869-1932).Mendel is best remembered for the introduction of duboisine as a treatment for
Parkinson's disease . Duboisine is an extract from the Australian plant "Dubosia myoporoides". Mendel was an advocate concerning the unification of psychiatry and neurology as complementary disciplines. He also did important studies ofepilepsy and progressiveparalysis .Among his medical writings is a textbook on psychiatry titled "A Psychological Study of Insanity for Practitioners and Students", which has been translated into English.
