- Soulboy
Soulboys were a
working class Englishyouth culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Fans of US soul andfunk music, the culture emerged in the south of England when atNorthern Soul events staged in theSouth of England , attendees began to take more interest in the more modern funk andjazz funk sounds of artists suchLonnie Liston Smith andRoy Ayers than the obsessive interest in obscure 1960s soul records that characterized the Northern Soul scene. The culture emerged around certain clubs in theSouth East of England such asThe Goldmine inCanvey Island andThe Royalty in Southgate as well as a number of specialist DJs includingChris Hill ,Robbie Vincent , Greg Edwards and Froggy.Caister Soul Weekender s became the main event in the soulboy scene and still exist today. Much of the Casual scene that emerged in the 1980s was borrowed from Soulboys, not least the sideways fringed Wedge haircut. Although the soulboy scene was huge by the early 1980s it received little media coverage as it was centred around US funk acts and was largely working class. Therefore, it received far less coverage than other moremiddle class youth cultures of the same period, notably theNew romantics .External links
