- Chilean mill
-
The Chilean Mill was a piece of equipment used on the Ballarat goldfields in the earliest period of gold mining. It was made out of a very large stone which rotated and was pulled by a horse. The mass of this stone was so heavy that it crushed up the gold bearing quartz. If there was gold inside the quartz you would be able to see the gold inside.
