Radio Larrakia 94.5FM, call sign 8KNB, is the only Indigenous radio station licensed to broadcast in the Darwin and surrounding region. Radio Larrakia was established in 1998 by members of the Larrakia Aboriginal community to provide a voice for Larrakia Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the region to promote Larrakia culture and language through broadcast media. In 2006 Radio Larrakia underwent a complete restructure under a new Board and management to resurrect the radio station and put it back on track after it underwent a period of management and broadcasting issues until 2005 that risked the future of the important Indigenous broadcaster. In 2006 the new Board and management ensured that Radio Larrakia was restructured to provide vital broadcasting and communication services to Larrakia, the non-Larrakia Indigenous community and the wider community of the broadcast region. As a result of the hard work and dedication of the new Board and management and the support of the members, volunteers and Indigenous staff, Radio Larrakia is now a professionally operated and managed radio station. However, the process of resurrecting the important Indigenous radio station was made difficult by objectors and activists against the Indigenous broadcaster. Despite this Radio Larrakia 94.5FM has succeeded in becoming an important Indigenous broadcasting service, training provider and employer of Indigenous people of the broadcast region. In 2008 Radio Larrakia is now operating as a culturally appropriate radio service for the original purpose it was established and through the current Board and management has a highly successful Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program, is the leading broadcaster of Indigenous languages in Australia, broadcasts twenty four hours a day.The success of Radio Larrakia resulted from being managed by a highly qualified Larrakia Chief Executive Officer, and staffed by predominantly Larrakia Indigenous broadcasters including the most senior Larrakia Traditional Owner and having six Indigenous Board members in addition to a media professional.Radio Larrakia now has the highest number of Indigenous membership in the history of Radio Larrakia. Radio Larrakia broadcasts locally and nationally and has dedicated Indigenous programs that provide news, sport, information, interviews, youth programs, health programs, Indigenous meals program for the homeless, Indigenous music development, schools programs, Indigenous events programs, Indigenous community programs, the most popular hip hop program in Australia. Radio Larrakia website www.radiolarrakia.org has launched the Indigenous broadcaster to international recognition as a leading radio station and as a result has developed a massive communication network across Australia and around the world. Radio Larrakia has expanded its operations to new digital technology through training and development and is delivering broadcasting services to local, rural and remote Indigenous communities across Darwin, the Northern territory and the wider Australia. Radio Larrakia is successfully streaming live on the internet on Radio Larrakia's website providing Indigenous radio broadcasting programs twenty four hours a day.
