The first Gristede's [gruh-STEE-deez] was founded by brothers Dietrich (Dick) and Charles Gristede in
1888 . At the height of the company there were locations throughout NYC, as well asWestchester County andConnecticut .The Gristedes brothers sold the company to the
Southland Corporation in1969 . In1986 the Southland Corporation was acquired by theRed Apple Group , which is still the parent company of Gristede's.Locations
The vast majority of Gristede's locations are currently found within the New York City borough of Manhattan. There are four Gristede's locations currently outside of Manhattan:
Brooklyn ;Pelham Manor, Scarsdale ,Westchester County ; andLocust Valley, New York .There was also a Gristedes in the town of Somers, Westchester County, NY. This store was notable for being the farthest Gristedes location from Manhattan for over a decade as well as for its filth. The store has since closed.
