bonuses = The Prix Thomas Bryon is a Group 3 flat horse race inFrance open to two-year-oldthoroughbred s. It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) atSaint-Cloud Racecourse , and it takes place annually in October. It is named in honour of
Thomas Bryon , an Englishman who helped establish thoroughbred horse racing in France in the 19th century. Bryon published several racing guides and manuals, such as "The Sportman's Companion for the Turf" (1827) and "Le Haras Français" (1828). The latter was the first attempt at a French stud-book. On November 11, 1833 he was the secretary at the founding meeting of the "Société d'Encouragement", which was to become the main governing body of horse racing in France. The following year he released the first volume of the "Calendrier des Courses de Chevaux" – the French Racing Calendar. The Prix Thomas Bryon was first run in 1924, and its distance was initially set at 1,600 metres. This was cut to 1,500 metres in 1927. Throughout
World War II the race was abandoned, with no running from 1939 to 1945. The event's only departure from Saint-Cloud came in 1954, when it was temporarily switched to Longchamp. This was because of modernisation work at its regular home. At Longchamp the distance of the race reverted to 1,600 metres, and this was maintained upon its return to Saint-Cloud in 1955.A second period over 1,500 metres began in 1958, and it continued at this length until 1990. It returned to 1,600 metres in 1991. The race is presently scheduled for the first half of October, but before 2001 it was often contested in late October or November.
