Philip Stanton

Philip Stanton (born 1962) is an American artist and author based in Barcelona, Spain, director of the design group [http://www.stantonstudio.com Stanton Studio] , whose works include multimedia design projects and urban installations. He is also the author and illustrator of children's books published in Europe and the United States.

Biography

Education and formation

Stanton was born in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. At the age of four, he moved with his family to the east coast of Florida near Cape Kennedy.

Philip Stanton earned a BFA degree in fine arts from Rollins College in Florida, and an MFA degree in illustration from School of Visual Arts in New York. In New York he worked as a designer and art director with Jean-Claude Suarès at Prentice Hall Press, a division of Simon and Schuster.

Barcelona

Stanton moved to Barcelona in 1988 after a series of journeys in Europe. The city has been an important reference and element in his work since. The colors and energy of Mediterranean life, as well as his admiration for twentieth century masters Picasso and Matisse are refelected in many of his projects.

Since 1988 Stanton has participated in more than 40 solo and group exhibitions and has collaborated with newspapers and magazines (his covers for the cultural section of Barcelona newspaper [http://www.lavanguardia.es La Vanguardia] were awarded prizes by the [http://www.adg-fad.org ADGFAD] and included in the 1992 European Illustration/Illustration Now annual), as well as with a number of Spanish and internacional companies.

His work has received a number of design and illustration awards in Spain including: 12 Laus awards, the Apel.les Mestres prize for children's literature and the Junceda illustration prize from the Catalan professional illustrator's association [http://www.apic.es APIC] . Internationally his work has won awards or been included for publication in the Cresta Awards, the British Design and Art Direction Annual, and the Type Directors Club annual.

Stanton is also head of the postgraduate illustration program and professor of illustration at the [http://www.eina.edu EINA Art & Design School] in Barcelona.

Children's book author and illustrator
