Seán Gorman is the current
Secretary General (civil service head) of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment of theGovernment of Ireland . He was appointed to the post in October 2004, and, under existing legislation, will normal serve for a maximum of seven years. He replaced Paul Hanran.Previous to his appointment Gorman was Assistant Secretary General of the Labour Force Development Division of the same department, serving at the Department's representative on the board of
Foras Áiseanna Saothair (FÁS), the state training and employment authority as well as CERT,Fáilte Ireland andShannon Development . He was also involved in establishing InterTradeIreland, the cross-border trade promotion body.As Secretary General, Gorman is Chair of the Government High level group on Asia. He is a member of the board of the
Irish Management Institute . In April 2007 he was appointed by then Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment,Micheál Martin , to co-ordinate cross-departmental efforts at reducing 'red tape' for Irish businesses.Originally from
Mountmellick ,County Laois , Gorman now lives inNaas ,County Kildare and is married with three children.
