Sister Toldja

Sister Toldja (born 1984 in Chicago, Illinois ) is an American blogger noted for her social commentary and satirical wit. Her website "Me, Myself An Eye"¹ [http://thebeautifulstruggler.blogspot.com] (which borrows its name from the Charles Mingus album of the same title) was launched in 2006. She has come under harsh criticism for her scathing remarks about music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce. She makes references to her alma mater, Howard University and her hometown of Chicago, but keeps a tight lip about her true identity. Much of her writing has focused on her sometimes unbelievable misdaventures in Washington, DC; in summer 2007, she relocated to Brooklyn, NY.

Sister Toldja is sometimes confused with Sister Toldjah (spelled with an 'h'), a middle-aged White right-wing conservative blogger. Both women have adapted their psuedonymns from the rapper/author Sister Souljah, who garnered national attention in 1992 when then presidential-candidate Bill Clinton criticized comments she made in an interview with journalist David Mills. Toldja maintains that she had not heard of Sister Toldjah when she chose her moniker. She decided to keep it, despite the possible confusion and sharp contrasts between herself and Toldjah. Toldja has said that, as her message is more in line with Sister Souljah's music and writing, she is more fitting of the name (which she considers to be an homage to the rapper).

Toldja's style of writing and approach to certain topics is quite different from many of her blogging peers. While she considers herself to be a Black nationalist and womanist, she also spends a lot of time detailing her frequent trips to local bars and her tendency to cover her dreadlocks with a wig. She is currently working on an as-of-yet untitled screenplay and plans to publish a book detailing her unique life experiences.

In spring 2007, Toldja was added to the lineup of writers for the Blind-I blog, a website that features music reviews, fashion news and current events. In September 2007, Me, Myself An Eye was named the "Best Personal Blog" by popular vote in the 2007 Black Weblog Awards. The blog's title was mistakenly listed as "The Beautiful Struggler" on the awards website.
