Jan Gerritsz van Bronckhorst

Jan Gerritsz van Bronckhorst

Jan Gerritsz van Bronckhorst (or "Bronchorst", "Bronkhorst") (1603, Utrecht - November or December 1661, Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter and engraver of the Baroque period.

Van Bronckhorst apprenticed with a glass engraver in Arras. He moved to Paris in 1620, and returned to Utrecht in 1622, where he married Catalijntje van Noort in 1626. He frequented the studio of Gerard van Honthorst. In 1647 he moved to Amsterdam where he created the stain-glass windows and the organ doors of the Nieuwe Kerk (finished in 1655). Described as the last church stain-glass painters in Holland [http://www.jstor.org/view/09510788/ap020531/02a00190/0.] . Unlike his work for churches, his secular paintings show the influence of Caravaggio, and also show a striking appeal to sensuality [ [http://www.wga.hu/html/b/bronchor/sl_nymph.html Sleeping Nymph and Shepherd by BRONCHORST, Jan Gerritsz van ] ] .
