It has developed two brands exclusive to the company: equal2new certified pre-owned networking and voice hardware, and CABLExpress Cables.

Company history

William G. Pomeroy founded the company in 1978. He first ran the business out of his home, originally dealing in used IBM System 370 mainframe options – features, channels and memory. The company conducted business at a lower cost over the phone. Its scope was nationwide. Soon the company also handled mainframe equipment, chillers, air handlers, raised flooring and underfloor bus and tag cables. It then developed the CABLExpress Cables brand.

In 1980, the company adopted the name CABLExpress to identify its growing business in IBM mainframe cables. By 1985, it provided IBM underfloor cabling to the majority of the Fortune 500 companies. In 1987, the company decided to expand its mainframe cable business to include network cable products. In the mid-1990s, the company re-entered the used equipment business. It created the "equal2new" brand to distinguish its networking and voice equipment. In 2004, the company officially changed its name to CXtec as a hybrid of CABLExpress Technologies to help demonstrate its focus on networking, voice and storage hardware, as well as cabling products.

Present

Today, CXtec’s cable business has transitioned from copper bus and tag mainframe cables to fiber optic cables used in data and communications applications, along with cables for LAN and WAN networking applications. It also provides new and manufacturer-refurbished data and voice equipment. It offers customers an Asset Recovery program that provides cash, credit or trade for their used hardware.

Though CXtec has repeatedly been voted one of the best companies to work for over the years, they recently laid off nearly 70 employees in June and July 2008. This was largely due to Cisco Systems not renewing a special agreement that allowed CXtec to sell refurbished Cisco equipment as "equal2new" - its own brand of refurbished productFact|date=July 2008. The loss of this special agreement resulted in the decline CXtec's revenue by around 25%.
