Edward Samuel Miliband (born 24 December 1969, St Pancras,
England) is a British economistand politician. He has been chairman of the Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers, which directs the UK's long-term economic planning. He was elected Labour Member of Parliamentfor the South Yorkshireconstituency of Doncaster North in the 2005 general election. He was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancasterand Minister for the Cabinet Officeon 28 June 2007 making him and his brother David Milibandthe first brothers to serve in Cabinet since Edward and Oliver Stanleyin 1938. Miliband was also appointed to the Privy Council as he works in close proximity to papers of state and The Queen. On 3 October 2008, Miliband was promoted to Secretary of Stateat the newly created Department of Energy and Climate Changeat Cabinet level.
Miliband is the son of
Marion Kozakand the late Marxisttheorist Ralph Miliband(son of Polish-Jewish parents from Warsaw) who fled Belgiumduring the Second World War. He went to Haverstock Comprehensive School (now called Haverstock School Business & Enterprise College) on "Haverstock Hill" in Chalk Farm. He read PPE at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and Economics at the London School of Economics. As a teenager, he reviewed films and plays on LBCRadio's Young London programme as one of its "Three o'Clock Reviewers".After a brief career in television journalism, he became a speechwriter and researcher for Labour politician Harriet Harmanin 1993, and then for Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brownthe following year. In 2003–4, he spent a year's sabbaticalat Harvard University, as a visiting lecturer in government.
In early 2005 he resigned from HM Treasury and, in May, was elected to Parliament. In Tony Blair's cabinet reshuffle of 5 May 2006 he was made the Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office. In June 2007, he was appointed Cabinet Office minister in

3 October 2008, Ed Miliband was promoted to the cabinet with the portfolio and responsibility for the newly created government department, the Department of Energy and Climate Changeas its Secretary of State after being moved in the cabinet reshuffle whereby previously he was Cabinet Office Minister.
