During his military career, "John served in a tier one counter-terrorist unit that worked closely with Delta and Seal Team 6. John participated in global operations as a mission commander, pilot, and mission planner (El Salvador, Panama, Colombia, Egypt, etc.)," according to his bio Robb, John. He left Gomez in 2001 and moved to Dave Winer's Userland where he acted as CEO, COO, and President. While here, Robert Scoble worked for him as Director of Marketing. Robb left when he saw the writing on the wall in July 2003 as a result, Winer had his blog deleted.

For a few months Robb then focused on building Mindplex, designed to combine a team of experts in various fields with users looking for answers to specific questions. This project was abandoned and Robb took some time off to be with his family.

In 2005 Robb consulted with Marco Iansiti's Keystone Strategy for a Microsoft initatied project.

From September 2005 to January 2007 Robb acted as CTO/COO/CPO for Hubcast Inc, [http://www.hubcast.com international printing on demand service] , which utilizes a Robb-built software platform to route enterprise publishing to a global network of distributed printers.
