- Reginarids
The Reginarids were a kin-group in
Lotharingia during theCarolingian andOttonian centuries. They were the first dynasty of theCounty of Hainault and they supplied twoDukes of Lorraine .Following the death of
Charles the Fat , the Reginarids began a long fight with theConradines for supremacy in Lotharingia. [Reuter, 135.] When they triumphed, in 910, it was in electingCharles the Simple as king. It was the combined forces of Bruno I of Lorraine and theCarolingians ofWest Francia that finally broke the Reginarids' hold on power. [Ibid, 168.] In 958, Reginar III had his lands confiscated and redistributed toGerard, Count of Metz , of theMatfridings , enemies of his family since the reign ofZwentibold . [Ibid, 159.]The Reginarids supported
Lothair of France againstOtto II , but they made a deal with the latter in 978. [Ibid, 176.] Nonetheless, the Reginarids were not longer a unified family by the end of the tenth century. [Ibid, 192.] Their descendants in Mons and Louvain continued their spirit of opposition to the king, however. [Ibid, 201.]ources
