"Farmer Wants a Wife" is a reality television series developed by Fremantle Media. The first edition premiered in UK on ITV1 in 2001. However, the original idea probably dates back to the TV program "Bauer sucht Bäuerin", broadcasted 1983 in the Swiss television. After its UK debut in 2001, the show had more than 10 localized versions around the world, with mixed ratings reports. Premiered in spring 2008, the U.S. version consists of 8 episodes, during which 10 women are trying to be chosen by a bachelor farmer. The latest country to be swept by the craze is South Africa. The show, presented by local actress Elma Postma, premiered on the 30th of September 2008. This series has a slightly different slant - it is broadcast in Afrikaans! Boer Soek 'n Vrou won't mean much to international viewers, but to people proficient in Afrikaans, it provides not only a chance to meet South Africa's bachelor boere, but also gives one many glimpses of the varied landscapes of this vast country, as the 10 contestants live on farms scattered far and wide. Added to which, 2 of the 10 contestants are farm girls looking for the men of their dreams...
