Camp Tonawandah

Camp Ton-A-Wandah ("By the fall of water" in Cherokee) is an annual all-girls summer camp located outside of Hendersonville, North Carolina, in the Flat Rock area. The camp is open to girls aged 6 through 15, for a total of 9 weeks each year (3 sessions of 3 weeks each). 16-year-old girls who wish to attend become CITs (Counselors In Training), and young women aged 17 and up serve as cabin counselors (many of whom come from foreign countries, such as Australia and South Africa). In 2008, the camp will be celebrating its 75th anniversary.

The camp is not affiliated with any particular religion, but leans toward the Christian tradition (non-denominational services are held each Sunday morning, blessings are sung before each meal, and the Lord's Prayer is played as the lights-out signal). It also does not focus on any one particular sport -- over two dozen activities are offered, including horseback riding, basketball, swimming, soccer, baking, canoeing, softball, nature, rock climbing, kayaking, and many more. Furthermore, campers are randomly divided into three tribes -- Cherokees (blue), Mohawks (red), and Navajos (purple) -- that compete against each other throughout the summer and earn points (for everything from performance to creativity to team spirit).

Facilities

The camp is located on Lake Ton-A-Wandah, and the facilities include a gymnasium (with a stage), dining hall, residential cabins, separate shower houses, horse stables (housing up to 24 horses), a rock climbing wall, lodge, infirmary, and facilities for various other activities. Favorite summer activities include the Counselor Hunt (a giant game of hide-and-seek) and Tribe Day (an all-camp competition between the three camp tribes).Plus youhave camp dances with camps like Pennical, Falling Creek, and Camp Carolina.
